JIDE Icon Set – beautiful icons for your Java/Swing applications

Here is the exciting news for all developers who hate being forced to design icons (I said it for myself :). As JIDE is focused on UI design area, we think it would be nice if we can create some icons for our customers who are Java/Swing developers. Developers are not good at designing icons but icon is a very important part to any user interface. You can’t just ignore it. So after several months of hardwork, we finally release our first stock icon set with 141 professionally designed icons. This icon set is built by our graphic designer along with our developers for JIDE component products. By combining both the artistic talent and the logical thinking talent together, this icon set is designed with developer in mind which makes it extremely easy to use in any software applications, especially for Java/Swing applications which all our existing JIDE customers and users are building. It even comes with a jar file that you can put into your class path and start to use those beautiful icons right away. Anyway, you can find more information about the developer oriented features over here. Even though it is not free, the price for this icon set is at a very affordable $149.99 for the Java version which is roughly $1 per icon. At the same time, we also introduced custom icon design services to meet your need. If you dream to have a consistent user interface with a set of unique icons across all applications in your company, we are right here to help you.

Hope you will like those icons. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know.

Looks great David!

Very nice, indeed – and interesting move from JIDE. We are currently using FamFamFam Silk icons in our JIDE-powered application, however they are hard to customize and quite limited.

On the other hand, I have to say, I was expecting more icons from you – especially document/table related (add/remove row to name one). There are many icons in above mentioned set which I would miss (for example: delivery, badge, user, role, plugin, site, …). (Any plans on expanding this set or making other sets?)

IMHO it wouldn’t be bad move implement this policy: if custom icon request is such that other developers could benefit from/use it, you could give the customer option to pay less for the design in exchange for disclaiming exclusive rights.

Also it would be nice to have source files in vectors (AI or SVG).

Anyway, I’m glad you made this move and I’m eager to see more from you.

Hi mazy,

Thanks for the comments. It is encouraging.

Yes, we plan to release more icons in two directions. One is more sets with different styles. We at least want to have one set for Vista, Mac OSX and Linux. The other is to extend the current basic icon set. It would be at least database icon set, finance icon set and network/internet icon set. This is three areas I think would be useful as many our customers are in those areas. For more specific areas, I would expect custom icon services will help. Of course, just like what we did to custom component contract, if the customers agree us to release the icons they requested, we will only charge half the actual fee. So if you feel you could do it, please let me know. In fact, I also need help from you guys to figure out what icons are needed in certain industry areas we are not familar with.

Comparing with PSD version, I personally feel AI or SVG lack in details. PS is still the best in term of the fine details. But they are some options we will experiment next.
